Amazing Spider-Girl #1
Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Ron Frenz
Penciller: Ron Frenz
Synopsis: May attempts a life after retiring as Spider-Girl but that turns out not to be easy.
Comments: The title "Whatever Happened to the Daughter of Spider-Man?" is probably taken from the last pre-Crisis Superman story, "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" Early bird cameo of Sara Hingle who will become more important later.
The Spider-Girl comic Jimmy and Wes collaborate on looks like it's an Image art excess from McFarlene and Liefeld with the big guns and unconventional panels.
The "In Memoriam" statue is a reference to the people Galactus killed in Last Planet Standing. They sure put it up fast.
May seems to be a fan of Ren & Stimpy with her "Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!" line.
May's clothes evoke the colors of her costume. It's a call back to the first issue of Spider-Girl where she had to use her own clothing as a disguise. Her father also used a hooded sweatshirt in Amazing Spider-Man #433.
Charlie sure is a cretin. Trying to burn down a battered women's shelter. The dialogue between Charlie and Spider-Girl is similar to Thor #418 and Spider-Girl #65.
What's in the bag? It's glowing. Is it what was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction? Although it looks green like Kryptonite.
The Hobgoblin sure is a bad guy to beat up Caitlan and lock a bunch of already traumatized women and children in the basement.
Starting with this issue, the narration changes from second person from the original Spider-Girl series to first person.
