Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 2 #2

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Secrets about Mayhem come out and American Dream and Buzz agree to team up.  Comments: Young Guido, of course, looks like a caricature of young Tom DeFalco.  I feel like Mayhem is using the voice of fans and maybe upper management at Marvel and Spider-Girl is using the voice of Tom and Ron when it comes to what people expect from their heroes. Also, reintroducing the Punisher makes things grim and gritty.  It finally comes out that April is a killer. She's using some bravado there because she didn't kill anyone before Tombstone.  Buzz compares American Dream to 7 of 9 (Jeri Ryan), Eliza Dushku and Lindsey Vonn. My cousins on their father's side are distantly related to Lindsey Vonn. They're all Kildows.  After attacking Buzz, American Dream now wants him to drop everything and team up.

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: The Punisher returns to New York. Comments: The Punisher paraphrases Douglas MacArthur's quote, "Old soldiers never die. They simply fade away." He also makes a play on words by saying far from the maddening crowd which is taken from the title of a Thomas Hardy novel, Far from the Madding Crowd.   May also calls Kaine "Uncle Kaine" like Darkdevil did in Spectacular Spider-Girl #7.  Wes is kind of May's wingman here by spilling his coffee on her to give her an excuse to get away. The guy mopping up the mess looks like Coach Thompson. Did Vice Principal Slattery end up firing him?  I love American Dream's manicure.

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: A new costumed player enters the scene and the gang war causes an old player to come out of retirement.  Comments: Wildcard reminds me of V from V for Vendetta, although he should probably remind me more of Jack from the Royal Flush Gang.  Don't sniff a woman's hair, Wes. I suppose he wants to confirm she's Spider-Girl.  Spider-Girl compares Wildcard to the Joker, but I'm not seeing it.  It's good thing Gene's so stupid, because what April did would tip off most people that she's superhuman.  The Punisher is back. Given how dark the comic has been going with April killing people, I guess it only a matter of time before a grim n' gritty anti-hero came back.

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Spider-Girl tries to end the gang war, but someone betrays her.  Comments: April finally adopts the name "Mayhem."  Looks like Guido and Nunzio are out of jail and still in Don Silvio's good graces.                                                            That old TV excuse...

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: The gang war heats up. Comments: The name of the pizza joint that's a front for the mob is "Falconi's." Carmine Falcone was a mob villain the Batman comics.  They always say, "*eep!"

Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #7

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Spider-Girl and Daredevil go looking for April.  Comments: This rescue totally works, right? The tree dancing like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ? That joke from Superman , "Who's got her?" is made again.  Spider-Girl previously stated in in Amazing Spider-Girl #0 that she's aware Kaine is related to her father somehow, but apparently doesn't pick up on Darkdevil calling him Uncle Kaine.  Simone mentions that her father is a corporate lawyer. Simone's mother, Marlene, was a corporate lawyer when she was assassinated. Another prominent corporate lawyer in the Marvel Universe is Harry Leland, Black Bishop of the Hellfire Club.

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: It's Mayhem and Fury vs. Spider-Girl and Darkdevil.  Comments: It's looks like Wes may have figured out who Spider-Girl is. Also, Cafe Indigo is said to have been established in 1998, the year MC2 started.  By wanting to drive Spider-Girl mad, I suppose Simone is trying to her own version of The Killing Joke. Her wingspan reminds of Goliath on Gargoyles.  Fury probably went too far in calling Mayhem "Spider-Clone." If Mayhem was pretending that she was being coerced to fight Spider-Girl, then that shattered her desire to go along.  With Spider-Girl and Darkdevil watching, Simone can't do to Fury what she did to Tombstone.  Yeah, it didn't occur to April that she could have removed the bomb at any time. That's the ticket.

Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #6

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Fury has kidnapped and imprisoned Mayhem.  Comments: Kolina Frederickson's daughter is now referred to as "Connie Fredrickson", her last name is still misspelled or could be another alias. Given how fast Fury put this plan together and how fast Connie's plastic surgery was, they must have used Mr. Nobody's plastic surgeon who was mentioned in Spider-Girl #66.  Simone is revealed to be Rene's daughter.  Wes is more heroic than Gene, since that's Gene's girlfriend Fury is abducting.
