Spider-Verse Unlimited #29

Image
Writer: Stephanie Williams Art: Nathan Stockman Synopsis: May and Benjy's showdown with Arcade.  Comments: Benjy reminds me Jon Kent, the Super Son here.  Not only strong, but Benjy is pretty agile as well.  May is able to utilize one of the deathtraps to free themselves, but Arcade flees. He accuses them of cheating which reminded me of Riddler from the Batman: The Animated Series episode, "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?"   Jason seems to be unaware that his uncle is evil and takes being unemployed in his stride.  At home, May doesn't mention what happened to her parents and with Arcade still out there....The End?

Spider-Verse Unlimited #28

Image
Writer: Stephanie Williams Art: Nathan Stockman Synopsis: May and Benjy get the VIP treatment at the arcade, little knowing how deadly that hospitality can be.  Comments: The mysterious figure arranges for Benjy to hit the jackpot on tokens and the leads him and May to be escorted to the VIP room for private entertainment. This seems kind of suspect for a children's arcade.  I guess that band is confirmed to be animatronics. I think they could do better for VIP entertainment if it legit had to come up.  I think of Lester's Possum Park from A Goofy Movie.  Suddenly, the villain reveals himself in Great and Power Oz style and and says he is R. Cade III (Arcade). I guess no relation to the Spider-Man and X-Men villain Arcade.  Arcade reveals his origin that he turned to evil after his childhood arcade was destroyed in a superhero battle. The video game of Secret Wars is just the first issue of that comic.  May thinks his origin is lame, but I've heard worse.  Benjy makes a r

Spider-Verse Unlimited #27

Writer: Stephanie Williams Art: Nathan Stockman Synopsis: May and Benjy arrive at the indoor amusement park, little knowing that they are being watched.  Comments: From the opening panels, we get a sense that Benjy is a lot older than he was during Tom and Ron's run and even the Spider-Verse crossover. He's fully ambulatory and verbal and seems about kindergarten or early elementary age.  I really hope those are animatronics and not people inside them having to do that job.  Jason is working at the arcade owned by his uncle and does the old "be nice to the little brother of the girl you're crushing on trick." Benjy seems uneasy with him.  While there, Benjy and May seem a little reckless using their powers. Although in May's case, she was stopping someone from getting hit in the head by a stray ski ball. Because every place has CCTV, they of course get seen by a mysterious figure. Benjy's webbing was established to be organic like Spider-Man's in the

Spider-Verse Unlimited #26: Canon?

Image
Written by: Stephanie Williams Penciled by: Nathan Stockman Synopsis: On her way home, Spider-Girl teams up with the Ladyhawks against Mr. Abnormal and Killerwatt.  Comments: I found this to be an enjoyable story. Is this canon? I think so. Nothing really seems to strongly contradict what's been established or it can waved away with Spider-Verse shenanigans.  So May and Davida are invited by a guy named Jason to his uncle's "fun center." May seems flattered by the attention.    Spider-Girl sees the Ladyhawk twins fighting Mr. Abnormal and Killerwatt in front of McDuffie's comic book store. You can see a word that is somewhat cut off that looks like "Static." Dwayne McDuffie (1962-2011), of Milestone Comics, created African-American heroes like Static, Icon and Rocket. Ladyhawk was not created by McDuffie. They were created by Tom DeFalco and Pat Olliffe. Killerwatt and Mr. Abnormal due to bring to mind the McDuffie characters, the aforementioned Static
