Spider-Girl #58

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Spider-Girl and her allies battle evil doppelgangers of famous heroes in an alternate dimension.  Comments: Spider-Girl's fight with her father's doppelganger and the satisfaction she gets from being able to take out her frustrations on him mirrors Stinger's fight with her father's doppelganger in A-Next #11.  I wonder if "bargain basement Thor" was something DeFalco and Frenz had to hear about Eric Masterson?  I like smug Nova over Spider-Girl's shoulder.

Spider-Girl #57

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz  Synopsis: Spider-Girl travels to an alternate dimension.  The Iron Man helmet in the portrait is the one he spotted from Tales of Suspense # 48-53 and Avengers #3-5.  That version of Seth is from the story arc in Thor #386-400.  That version of Seth is from the story arc in Thunderstrike #17-23.  May's shirt has the cartoon version of Lizzie McGuire on it. Lizzie McGuire (2001-2004) was a Disney Channel TV show that starred Hilary Duff.  I like the Thing skinned Awesome Androids.

Spider-Girl #55

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Pat Olliffe Synopsis: Spider-Girl goes after the Soldiers of the Serpent and stumbles into a trap.  Comments: Normie rejects May for all the right reasons. He's in a relationship, she's underage and the baggage between their families.  I like this silent page of Spider-Girl sneaking onto the Serpent ship.  After overpowering Spider-Girl again, the Serpent leader goes into Bond villain territory and dunks Spider-Girl into the Hudson River strapped to an anchor. I didn't include this on my superheroes on the cross post on my other blog .  The font in which Green Goblin says his name is the same as the title font for the Green Goblin series which starred the Phil Urich version of the Goblin.  Green Goblin saying that criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot is a popular misquote from Batman #1 where Bruce Wayne says that villains are a "superstitious cowardly lot". No "and."

Spider-Girl #56

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Pat Olliffe Synopsis: The identity of the Serpent leader is revealed.  Comments: Pretty strong language here.  This is kind of Spider-Girl's moment of strength like when her dad threw off all that rubble in Amazing Spider-Man #33.  The Serpent leader is revealed to Seth, the Egyptian god of death. A past foe of Thor and Thundestrike. His look here is the one he sported in Thunderstrike .  Spider-Girl doesn't know who Seth is and he is insulted. She only seems to know Seth Green from Buffy the Vampire Slayer .  Buzz continues to dunk on Spider-Girl which is probably setting back JJ's chances to get back together with May since she knows his dual identity.

Spider-Girl #54

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Pat Olliffe Synopsis: Spider-Girl uncovers a plot by the Soldiers of the Serpent.  Comments: Spider-Man fought mimes in Peter Parker: Spider-Man vol.2 #21.  I like how Spider-Girl holds this big gun, but thankfully she only uses it as a melee weapon.  Spider-Girl doesn't do too well against the Serpent leader.  May acts on her feelings for Normie.

Spider-Girl #53

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Pat Olliffe Synopsis: Spider-Girl is seen through the eyes of an "invisible girl."  Comments: This is story is similar to issue #51 in that it's told from the point of view of May's classmate who admires her from afar. Though in Meagyn Brady's case, I think it's platonic. As the last issue was artistically experimental, this time it's the writing style that's more experimental.  I think Meagyn's "invisibility" is a metaphor for her loneliness and isolation and shouldn't be taken literally. That's just my opinion.  Felicity gets the apology she fantasized about last issue and Spider-Girl accepts her as partner. Although it doesn't go further than this issue.  Meagyn must think May and Felicity are LARPing. This was years before Pokémon Go. Meagyn sets off Meg's spider-sense, since her trailing of her endangers May's secret identity. I'm just noting this here since Megyn setting or not

Spider-Girl #52

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: May deals with the fallout of her quitting Spider-Girl and Felicity fantasizes about a successful career as the Scarlet Spider.  Comments: This is a very experimental issue, artistic wise. Images of characters hang on the side or top of the page.  This is the set up to the MC2's answer to Freedom Force/Suicide Squad. Superhuman criminals forced to work for the government in order to avoid imprisonment.  There has been speculation (thanks frogoat) that Felicity is in love with May. The apology she fantasizes about is something you would want from someone who rejected you before, but now sees your worth.  Panels from Spider-Girl #49 are used here. Despite May saying she might see Alison again, we never see Alison again.
