American Dream #1
Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Todd Nauck
Penciller: Todd Nauck
Synopsis: American Dream investigates the case of missing immigrant while a new and old menaces loom.
Comments: American Dream bursts into the warehouse on her motorcycle the way Captain America did in Captain America vol. 3 #24 which was produced by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz.
"Resistance is futile." Apparently, American Dream likes Star Trek. We know that J2, Mainframe and Thunderstrike are from A-Next #10.
So only in this mini-series does American Dream have wings on her headgear. On the covers of this series which were drawn by Ron Frenz, American Dream does not have any wings on her headgear. It might have been an error by Todd Nauck and after the first issue, he just had to continue with it. In-universe, it's a look that she tried and didn't keep.
Maria Sapristi returns and has green highlights in her hair
like she did in A-Next #3. But the short hair and over one eye Veronica Lake
style makes her look like Viper to me.
We do learn American Dream's motorcycle is called the Dream
Machine. I'm not sure if Captain America ever named his motorcycle or van. It
would have been too easy to call them "Easy Rider."
Red Queen and Ion Man target American Dream because they think she's the weakest link. Red Queen even refers to her as a "glorified gymnast." Captain America was targeted and described the same way by the mob in his first solo story in Tales of Suspense #59, who described him as a "glorified acrobat."
Shannon now wears a uniform closer to the ones she wore in
A-Next #1 & #3, then the cosplay American Dream costume she wore in A-Next
#6.
Sophina's question if American Dream helps people like her
reminded me of the question in Green Lantern/Green Arrow #76 where Green
Lantern was asked what he had done to help black people on his planet after
helping out aliens off world.
I'm not happy about American Dream using the word "illegal." It was already fairly politically incorrect by 2008, but it shows that she's going to grow in later issues.
