American Dream #2

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Todd Nauck

Synopsis: While being ordered away by the government from an investigation, another investigation closer to home leads American Dream into danger.

Comments: Stinger, Mainframe and Thena no longer seem to be on the team and Freebooter is presumably still on a leave of absence since the events of Last Planet Standing.

Hill returns to be the obstructionist bureaucrat like she was in  Amazing Spider-Girl #9-12. In some ways she's reminiscent of the Avengers government liaison, Henry Peter Gyrich.

It's funny to see what food the Avengers get. Katherine, American Dream and Warp have to eat healthy since they probably have ordinary metabolisms. On the next page, Kevin's meal was a sandwich and an apple. J2 and Bluestreak can pig out. Sabreclaw seems to be a carnivore.

I don't know whether American Dream is just devoted to the job because she's still in mourning over Captain America and maybe she just doesn't see Kevin romantically. It could be a Black Cat/Spider-Man situation where the Black Cat had zero interest in Peter Parker. Also, and only her creators, can tell us for sure, perhaps American Dream is asexual or a lesbian. As Penumbra told Launchpad in an episode of the new Ducktales, she's not interested in dating an Earth...male. She does say Marco is handsome when Sophina shows him her picture, but that could be an aesthetic comment.

Shannon disparages her own disguise, but it's good enough to fool Sophina, Red Queen and Ion Man. When she's standing next to Sophina and another person, you can see how tall she is. Shannon is supposed to be 6'2" (188cm), even if she isn't always drawn on model.

I wonder where American Dream stood on illegal immigration? Since she described her late father as being for law and order, she probably thought illegal immigration was breaking the law, when it turned out to be a much more complex issue when she saw it firsthand.

"Captain Amerigirl." I wonder if that was a name considered by Tom and Ron?

Save the villain. That's what heroes do.
