Spider-Girl #89

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: Spider-Girl takes on relationship abuse in this story.

Comments: Sandra Healy's story has been going on for almost 30 issues and this is the sad conclusion. I do think it's good they didn't let this storyline drop.

The title comes from a book by Walter Tevis "The Man Who Fell to Earth." about an alien who comes to Earth. It was made into a movie starring David Bowie.

I'm not sure who the title refers to. It could refer to both May and Sandra. May was dealing with inter-dimensional adventures in Spider-Girl #86-88 and Last Hero Standing #1-5 and now she deals with something closer to home. Sandra has had unrealistic ideas of a future with Howard and her hospitalization brings her back to reality.

First appearance of Caitlan Leiber who will play a small part in the beginning of the Amazing Spider-Girl series. Marvel Database says her first appearance was in Spider-Girl #60, which I don't agree with. The woman at the shelter in that issue didn't look anything like Caitlan.

I can answer May's question about why Megyn doesn't trigger her spider-sense. It's because she's not a threat. Megyn triggered May's spider-sense in Spider-Girl #53 because she was unintentionally jeopardizing May's secret identity. Peter had a similar issue with Greg Salinger aka. Foolkiller in that Greg would trigger Peter's spider-sense at random times, based on threat level.

May seems to be using her spider powers pretty openly. I guess Howard is too distraught to notice. Although he may not to be too bright because he didn't realize it when she nearly broke his hand before in Spider-Girl #65

Based on what Howard says about his father, he probably grew up in a household that had domestic abuse or at condoned idea of it. Howard's abusive father is probably why Sandra asked May if it was her father or her boyfriend who hit her in Spider-Girl #60.

The ending is in character for May, since she usually shows compassion for her enemies.
