Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #5

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Spider-Girl has to evade gangsters and the Jersey Devil.  Comments: "Kurt the kid" and "Pat the olive eater" is a reference to Batwing's creators Kurt Busiek and Pat Olliffe. The Jersey Devil was first apparently seen in the Pine Barrens.  Guido's reference to "muties in the sewer" could be a reference to the Morlocks . Spider-Girl is familiar with writers by knowing who Jean-Paul Satre is and paraphrasing " The rumors of my death... " quote attributed to Mark Twain. She did know who Joseph Campbell in Amazing Spider-Girl #25. Also, this is apparently Spider-Girl's first trip to New Jersey since she said in Spider-Girl #98 that she had never been to New Jersey.  Spider-Girl mentions Pennsylvania. Both Spider-Girl's main pencillers, Ron Frenz and Pat Olliffe, are from Pennsylvania.  With Spider-Girl throwing up and Nunzio needing to relieve himself, there's a lot of refere...

Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #4

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Tombstone versus Mayhem, but one is completely outmatched.  Comments: Tombstone attack Mayhem with a pipe also. Some of the more brutal hits gave to Spider-Man in the original fight in Spectacular Spider-Man #142 are used on Mayhem here. Some of the fight is also taken from Spectacular Spider-Man #206.  Mayhem reveals that she does not take prisoners and uses the news of Spider-Girl's death to impersonate her.

Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #3

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: May/Spider-Girl fights Tombstone while April fights a fire.  Comments: As with the final full page spread for the previous issue, the cover is taken from Spectacular Spider-Man #142.   A lot of panels of the fight are taken from Spider-Man/Tombstone fights in Spectacular Spider-Man #142 and #206, both that were drawn by Spider-Girl inker, Sal Buscema. Spider-Girl's reaction to punching Tombstone is also similar to her father's.  Tombstone also uses a pipe against Spider-Girl like did with her father in Spectacular Spider-Man #142.  First appearance of Guido. Nunzio made a background appearance last issue. They are visually based on Tom DeFalco (Guido) and Ron Frenz (Nunzio).  In another series they worked on, a Guido and Nunzio appeared in Kickers, Inc. #3.  I guess turning the other cheek isn't April's thing.  The identity of "Gwen Reilly" is revealed to be Connie Fredickson. Connie's...

Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #2

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciller: Ron Frenz Synopsis: After the murder of "Gwen Reilly", mysteries and suspicions deepen.  Comments: May seems to suspect that April is a sociopath. She does seem to get bored easily and has strange priorities such as wanting a cell phone after seeing a recently murdered woman. She also doesn't feel much grief over Gwen and think that she probably got what she deserved. I think April is just completely amoral. Not immoral. Amoral in that morals just don't factor in her decisions.  Rene is confirmed to have a child at Midtown High.  Darkdevil is shaken over the possibility he could have a half-sister.  Tombstone is hired by Silverback to go after Spider-Girl.  Tombstone holding Spider-Girl on top of a construction site is taken from Spectacular Spider-Man #142.  I first became familiar with Tombstone from the Spider-Man animated series.
