Spider-Girl #53

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Pat Olliffe

Synopsis: Spider-Girl is seen through the eyes of an "invisible girl."

Comments: This is story is similar to issue #51 in that it's told from the point of view of May's classmate who admires her from afar. Though in Meagyn Brady's case, I think it's platonic. As the last issue was artistically experimental, this time it's the writing style that's more experimental.

I think Meagyn's "invisibility" is a metaphor for her loneliness and isolation and shouldn't be taken literally. That's just my opinion.

Felicity gets the apology she fantasized about last issue and Spider-Girl accepts her as partner. Although it doesn't go further than this issue.

Meagyn must think May and Felicity are LARPing. This was years before Pokémon Go.

Meagyn sets off Meg's spider-sense, since her trailing of her endangers May's secret identity. I'm just noting this here since Megyn setting or not setting off May's spider sense comes up in later issues.

May's comment about Meagyn is unfortunately how a lot of introverts are perceived. I would like to recommend the movie Eighth Grade (2018), a film that deals with loneliness and isolation of a teenage girl who only has one parent.

This is probably the greatest moment of Meagyn's life. Her smile is adorable. I also like the puffy vest she wears. They come in multiples colors in the other issues she appears in.

This is the last appearance of Felicity's partner Diana. Felicia will only make one more cameo in the future. Felicity is dropped as a recurring character, only to make her next appearance over a year later. With issue #60 supposedly going to be the last issue, DeFalco used issues #54-59 to tie up A-Next storylines and forgot about the Hardys.  I would be curious if he or his collaborators weren't finding their story compelling enough to devote space to.

  1. All the unresolved plot lines left dangling after this point are all victims of the cancellation threat. Mongraine, Felicia, Diana, Felicity etc. What I would give to see them return and be resolved (a new Spider-Girl series by the original gang, please?)
