Avengers Next #1

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Ron Lim

Synopsis: After the events of Last Planet Standing, the Avengers regroup and face their next challenge.

Comments: On the covers of this mini-series, J2 wears the flannel shirt tied around his waist as he did in his own series and in the original A-Next series. In the interiors, he wears the red cargo pants.

Picking on Ron Lim some more, a great artist who took over Infinity Gauntlet from George Perez and had a good run on Captain America with Mark Gruenwald. Sabreclaw seems to be wearing boots here on the opening page.

The Asian tour guide Nancy made me wonder if that was supposed to be Nancy Lu.

A reminder. This is what Sabreclaw, who was fist drawn by Ron Lim, looked like when he first appeared in J2 #8 and this is what he looks like now. Reforming makes you less ugly I guess.

I wish Stinger would elaborate on why she left the Avengers if it just wasn't Mainframe. Perhaps it was the older Avengers rejoining (including her father) and Tony Stark and Vision throwing their weight around. Then there was Spider-Girl not wanting to be a team player. Oh well. Kevin's line about the world still needing heroes is taken from the epigraph that Thor left on his father's tombstone.

Wow, Marvel Super Hero Island at Universal Studios is brought up again after Sue Richards mentioned it in Last Planet Standing #1. Tom DeFalco must have gone there and had a good time. Spider-Girl mentioning Disney is funny. This issue came out in 2007 and Disney later bought Marvel in 2009. Although if you go to Orlando, you can only see Marvel in the Universal Studios Theme Park since Disney has an arrangement that they can only use Marvel west of the Mississippi and zzzzzzzzz, a bunch of boring legal stuff. Spider-Girl in her red sweatshirt disguise is a good continuity nod from Amazing Spider-Girl #1 because she hasn't put the webs back on again.
