Spectacular Spider-Girl vol. 1 #1
Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Ron Frenz
Penciller: Ron Frenz
Synopsis: The Parkers begin adjusting to life with May's clone.
Comments: It's funny since I mentioned before confusing Rene DeSantos and Phillipe DeJunae and here they are having a conversation.
April's Spider-Girl Red and Spider-Girl Blue suggestion is a reference to the Silver Age story in Superman #162. It was later adapted in the second volume of Superman in the 1990s with Ron Frenz drawing it. May's question of "...a dream, a hoax or imaginary [story]?" is a reference to "imaginary stories" at DC comics, a precursor to their Elseworlds comics. The quote was used on the cover of Uncanny X-Men #42 and in modern times, the cover of J2 #12 and Silver Age #1. In the case of the X-Men, it turned out to be a hoax. The cover lied.
Introduction of Silvio "Silverback" Barraca. Silvio is visually based on and has the name first name as Silvio "Sal" Buscema, the inker/finisher on Spider-Girl, a legend himself in the comics industry. Apparently Ron Frenz wanted to bring Big Julie the Gangster Gorilla from J2 and start calling himself Silverback, which was vetoed by Tom DeFalco. Not to be confused with Silvermane (Silvio Manfredi) who Man Mountain Marko worked for in their first appearance.
The hairstyles April morphs into were previously used by May in early issues of Spider-Girl.
The subplot of Moose hating Spider-Girl seems to have been dropped. Perhaps he finally realized that after egging Sara Hingle/Nucleus on, his thirst for vengeance was meaningless. From here on out, Moose becomes a background character.
I guess April is supposed to be an identical cousin like The Patty Duke Show.
Rene, whose last name has not been revealed at this point, is being driven near Midtown High, hinting to a connection there.
Whoever she is, "Gwen Reilly's" primary purpose is to rattle Peter since she is wearing the same clothes Gwen Stacy wore the night she died in Amazing Spider-Man #121. See? Down there the title says "The Night Gwen Stacy Died."
"I know this looks bad..."
