Spider-Girl #97

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciller: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: The return of the Hobgoblin!

Comments: The flashbacks are taken from Amazing Spider-Man #250 and Spectacular Spider-Man #261. The final panel in Spectacular Spider-Man #261 below despite having the Tom DeFalco trademark "The End...For Now" was actually scripted by Glenn Greenberg and co-plotted with Roger Stern.

Hobgoblin suiting up is similar to his first suit up in Amazing Spider-Man #238.

Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz were fired from Amazing Spider-Man before they could bring the Hobgoblin saga to a satisfying conclusion. Their editor, Jim Owsley, now known as Christopher Priest, brought it to a less than satisfying conclusion. The Hobgoblin's creator Roger Stern managed to salvage it all masterfully in a three part mini-series Hobgoblin Lives, which as illustrated by Ron Frenz. It was there that Roderick Kingsley was revealed to be the Hobgoblin.

Ron Frenz likes to promote an article written by Glenn Greenberg in Back Issue magazine that detailed the history of the Hobgoblin by those involved. Comics Cube has a good summary and uses quotes from the Back Issue article.
