DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Thor #453

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciler: Ron Frenz Synopsis: Eric battles Sif for the soul of Thor.  Comments: In the previous issue that was drawn by Gary Hartle, Sif agreed to serve Mephisto. Sif is wearing a dominatrix black bikini designed by the Jabba the Hutt.  Arko, the guard, overhears "Odin" plotting with Karnilla and alerts the Warriors Three. "Odin" easily dispatches with them in the back up story to this issue.  Eric is depowered by Karilla, so he decides just to change back to mortal self in the hopes of bringing Sif back to her senses. It works and he covers her with his jacket and they kiss, giving in to their sexual tension.  Susan is visited by her friends, one of whom is Bloodaxe. The man on Jerry's left, one of his co-workers, was never given any characterization, so I don't consider him a fair suspect. Nice for everyone to be wearing a jacket with a big collar.  The spirt in the Thor bag turns out not to be Thor. I guess Sif isn't serving Meph...

DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Spider-Man #26

Image
Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciler: Ron Frenz, Mark Bagley  Synopsis: Spider-Man meets up with someone who may be connected to his origin.  Comments: I'm not terribly interested in the main villain, except to say it's a guy in a force field costume and the mob is on his trail. The co-plot is about a young criminal, Jimmy Costas, who is thinking about his uncle's mistakes. He sure does think about his uncle a lot.  A Superman line. DeFalco used those a lot in Spider-Girl .  Spider-Man's split second look at Jimmy, who resembles the burglar who killed Uncle Ben in clothing and appearance, triggers memories of his origin. I was disappointed the retelling didn't keep the eyes bugging out of the mask like they did in Amazing Fantasy #15 when Spider-Man realized who the burglar was. So the burglar is on his mind for the payoff later.  Jimmy tells Spider-Man that his uncle was a burglar, making Spider-Man think that Jimmy was the nephew of the burglar. Jimmy mentions his b...

DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Thor #450

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciler: Ron Frenz  Synopsis: Eric and Code: Blue storm Asgard to rescue Odin and apprehend Ulik.  Comments: Code Blue charges in with "Wah-Hoo", just like the Howling Commandoes. Are they hitting the trolls with real bullets, as opposed to rubber?  I like all those wolves talking to Amora.  Fandral, you old dog.  Heimdall doesn't take kindly of being accused of treason by Eric.  Uroc, the rock troll, behind Ulik, was first drawn by Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy , in Thor #408. He even seems to have stubby horns like Hellboy.  I wonder if Rigger saying she fired some warning shots over the trolls' heads was written in by DeFalco? It would be almost an unintentional reference to Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes #2 where Dum Dum says in the dialogue that he scared a couple of Nazis off when the artwork seems to indicate that he shot them. Also, Tales of Suspense #66 where Hitler says the Red Skull "blasted every button"...

DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Thor #449

Writer: Tom DeFalco Penciler: Ron Frenz  Synopsis: Ulik breaks out of prison while Eric receives a message from Odin.  Comments: The recession is noted and this comic was published in early 1992. The economy was one of the reasons cited that George H.W. Bush was defeated by Bill Clinton in November of that year. The opposite of this situation happens in J2 #5,written by Tom DeFalco, where J2's destructive battle with Wild Thing leads to more work for construction workers.  I guess this fails the Bechdel Test. Amora is attacked by Skoll the Wolf God "the better to slay thee" and her axe gets left behind where someone comes and finds it and transforms not unlike Donald Blake all the way back in Journey into Mystery #83.  Majowski bearing down on Ulik in the van while saying "Wah-hoo!" reminds me of Dum Dum Dugan in Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes #2.  Eric receives a message from Odin that Heimdall is a usurper,  so he and Code: Blue are going to stor...
