DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Amazing Spider-Man #270
Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz
Penciler: Ron Frenz
Synopsis: Spider-Man fights to take down Firelord.
Comments: The cover is an homage to Avengers #96.
Jameson meets the new editor Kathryn Cushing and he knows to call her "Ms." after Carol Danvers educated him.
The fight in this issue is a remake of Amazing Spider-Man #230 where Spider-Man fought the Juggernaut. Like the Juggernaut, he attempts to drop a building on Firelord and blow him up in a raging inferno to no avail. Although in Firelord's case, the latter does weaken him a bit.
The Avengers' argument with Sikorsky is detailed in Avengers #258.
The cover is kind of a spoiler, but it didn't really matter, because if you read Avengers, the resolution of the fight was already spoiled a few months ahead of Amazing Spider-Man in the aforementioned Avengers #258. The two issues were supposed to come out the same month, but editor Jim Owsley pulled it from rotation because he considered releasing it in prestige format like an annual or graphic novel, but ended up releasing it as two consecutive issues anyway. Pulling it from rotation put Tom and Ron behind schedule and necessitated some fill ins. The details of what happened can be found here and in an interview with Tom and Ron here.
