DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Captain America #383

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes #13, told from Captain America's point of view.

Comments: This was a back up story done by Tom and Ron for Captain America #383. The main story was done by Mark Gruenwald and Ron Lim. This story takes place during the aforementioned Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes #13 (hereafter just referred to as Sgt. Fury for short). Remember how I said that Code Blue was based on the Howling Commandoes? Well, Tom and Ron got to work on the original team in this issue. Ron penciling this issue probably explains why he didn't pencil issue #431 of Thor and why Herb Trimpe filled in.

Sgt. Fury #13 shows Captain America and Bucky about to attack a Nazi convoy and then it cuts away and Steve Rogers shows up later as a prisoner and Bucky is impersonating a member of the Hitler Youth. Tom and Ron show us what happened. Cap and Bucky knock some Nazis off the cliff Indiana Jones style.

Gabe Jones is wounded and Izzy Cohen takes him away in both versions.

So as a twist, this story was also used in the miniseries Domination Factor: Avengers. In issues #2-3, Captain America's consciousness is sent back to this time to find a Golden Apple. It's quite convoluted.

The fight in the tunnel happens like it did in the original, although Frenz does not show Captain America throwing a grenade into a cannon. Jerry Ordway replicated that though. Ordway does take the line about Cap saying he has shrapnel in his leg from Captain America #383 (Tom and Ron). It was a "twist" ending in the original story that the GI that Fury kept running into was Steve Rogers/Captain America.
