DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Thor #390

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: Thor and the Avengers battle the assassins sent by Seth.

Comments: The pose of Thor is taken from a pin-up of Thor from Journey into Mystery #110.

The Captain (Steve Rogers) challenge to Thor "Try to conquer me" is what he said when he met the Avengers as Captain America after being revived.

Seth lost his hand when Odin blasted it off in Thor #241. Grog was listed as one of Thor's Top 10 Lamest Foes in Thor: The Legend

Captain Marvel thinking that Steve Rogers should lead the Avengers has some interesting subtext in that editor Mark Gruenwald forced Roger Stern of The Avengers title after Stern did not want Captain Marvel, who had become leader of the Avengers in issue #279, to step down in favor of Steve Rogers and Gruenwald fired him and had Captain Marvel written off the book.

This is a good summary of Iron Man #228. Steve Rogers confronted Iron Man in Captain America #341, which had a cover by Ron Frenz, whose cover was an homage of the cover of Daredevil #43.

You saw it here first: Steve Rogers lifting the hammer.

The Black Knight takes Grog to the Vault, a prison for superhuman criminals. I suppose this is just a precautionary measure? I mean, Grog is still entitled to due process, right? This reminds me of the first season of The Flash where Team Flash had metahumans imprisoned at STAR Labs without any due process.
