DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Thor #406

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: Thor goes to Wundagore to rescue Eric Masterson.

Comments: This was one of my first DeFalco/Frenz Thor issues. I bought it at a mall where someone had set up long boxes of comics. This along with issues #414 and #418.

The pose and panel composition of Thor storming Wundagore is taken from Thor #134.

Count Tagar leaves the origin of Mongoose ambiguous in that he's not exactly a New Man, but serves Wundagore. It reminds me of Uncanny X-Men #98 in that Wolverine was stated not be a regular mutant. There was a rumor that Marvel was going to reveal Wolverine to be an evolved Wolverine from the High Evolutionary.

The origin of the High Evolutionary is recounted from Thor #135.

The matter transporter for the Rigellians was used in Thor #132 and the pose of the High Commissioner seems to be taken from Thor #162.

Eric's quest into space seems to be almost a red herring for how he'll end up bonded to Thor.
