DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Thor #429

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: The rematch between Thor and the Juggernaut.

Comments: The cover is an homage to the famous Thor #126 cover.

The opening page has a close up of the Juggernaut's face like Thor #412 did. The Juggernaut here seems to be fuller in the face and had a Botox.

Thor correctly figures out that the Juggernaut's powers from magic and uses his hammer to neutralize them. Then he gives Juggernaut a long overdue beatdown.  One my favorite lines of all time is when Thor tells Juggernaut that the reason he can't lift the hammer is due to the weakness of his character, not his limbs. However, all good things must come to an end and Thor exiles Juggernaut once more. Eric Masterson will fight him again as Thunderstrike in Thunderstrike #2, but I don't think Thor fights him again until Thor vol. 2 #17.

The Wrecker unintentionally brings Mephisto into his fight when breaking Bulldozer out of jail and fighting Ghost Rider. I remember around this time John Romita Jr. redesigned Mephisto look more demonic, but Ron and most artists opted for John Buscema's original design.

The final page with Jerry and Susan saying they've figured out Eric's secret is taken from the final Amazing Spider-Man #257 where Mary Jane revealed to Peter that she knew he was Spider-Man.
