DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Hercules: Heart of Chaos #2
Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz
Penciler: Ron Frenz
Synopsis: Hercules goes on a mission with S.H.I.E.L.D that has tragic results.
Comments: The title is from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, "'Cry havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war." The rest of the quote is the title of the next issue.
Hercules befriends Roger "Buddy" Juniper, whose great-uncle was Jonathan "Junior" Juniper of the Howling Commandoes. Buddy remarks that they have numbers to remind them that they are expendable. Izzy Cohen of the Howling Commandoes noted that they were all expendable after Junior died. Like his great uncle, Buddy dies in combat.
The scene of the helicarrier taking off is similar to how it occurred in the Avengers movie 15 years later. Ron Frenz has commented on it, but I think it's great minds thinking alike. The shot of the helicarrier in the air is reminiscent of Strange Tales #135 and I don't think that's a coincidence.
