DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Hulk Smash Avengers #1

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: The Hulk teams up with the Masters of Evil against the Avengers.

Comments: The note at the bottom says that it takes place between Avengers #7 and #14. Precisely, due to the Wasp's mask and the continuity in Tales to Astonish, this takes place after Avengers #11 and Tales to Astonish #62.

The Hulk looks like the 1980s Sal Buscema Hulk. Not surprising since Sal did the inking for this issue.

Zemo pulling at his mask is a swipe from Avengers #6.

The Hulk being recruited by the Masters of Evil reminds me of when the Hulk was recruited by Namor in Avengers #3.

Zemo's robot with the battering ram arm is similar to the battering ram employed by one of Zemo's assassins in Tales of Suspense #60.

The Enchantress and the Executioner's real names Amora and Skurge are used. I don't believe their names were revealed until Thor #359 and #360, respectively, by Walt Simonson which were published in 1985.

When the Masters of Evil attack Rick Jones that causes the Hulk to turn against them. It reminded me of What If vol. 1 #3 where the Hulk turned against Namor when he attacked Rick.
