DeFalco/Frenz Retrospective: Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #18

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Penciler: Ron Frenz

Synopsis: Spider-Man, Silver Sable and Sandman fight to wrest control of the country from the Sinister Syndicate.

Comments: Spider-Man's ability to rest while taking a beating was established in Amazing Spider-Man #33.

In a nice contrast to last issue, Spider-Man thinks the townspeople are showing him gratitude when they're actually hurling words of disdain and threats.

The Beetle's objection to the murder of one of the rebels by Dr. Octopus foreshadows how he'll become a hero with the Thunderbolts.

It turns out being a super-villain is an expensive job. Now Spider-Man knows that he's not the only one who struggles with money. I don't know what appearances of Doctor Octopus this is sandwiched between. But Ron Frenz did get to draw Doctor Octopus which he didn't get to do during his original run.

The king is rescued after the usurpers are defeated, but he's a sour puss like the prince in Thor #430 when it's all finished.
